Art Education (Online / Low Residency MA)

澳门金沙投注_任你博-官网's Master of Arts in Art Education (MAAE) is grounded in the belief that artist-teachers experience transformative learning when their studies focus on compelling questions emerging from their own studio and teaching practices.

The MA in Art Education program is currently on hiatus.

Our MAAE prepares experienced K-12 artist-educators to pursue advancement in their field through the development of their practice as both artists and art educators. Designed for the working professional, the curriculum allows students to continue teaching while they complete their graduate degree.

Program Overview

Our MAAE is holistic; candidates explore multiple layers of meaning and experience in their art making and art teaching practices in order to better understand the complex whole that is their professional life and the field of contemporary art and art education.

Several components contribute to transformative learning in the MAAE:

  • each year a small group of diverse artist-teachers is invited to become a cohort that experiences all aspects of the Program (on campus and online) together, as a community of practice;
  • the faculty collaborate on curriculum and pedagogy in order to support every candidate in integrating teaching, research, and art-making practices in personally authentic and meaningful ways;
  • and, situated in a professional school of art and design in the culturally dynamic City of Baltimore, MAAE candidates work in centrally-located spacious studios in the Graduate Center, with easy access to a wealth of specialized campus resources, as well as a broad array of online resources through 澳门金沙投注_任你博-官网's digital services and archives.

Who Should Apply

The MAAE is designed for the experienced artist-teacher who wishes to maintain a teaching position - whether in a school, museum, or community setting, full- or part-time - while undertaking rigorous graduate work over a 14-month time period. Competitive applicants will have an undergraduate degree in studio art, design, or art education, or a degree in a related field with substantial experience in design or studio art; at least two years of experience teaching art in a professional setting; and fluency in the English language. In addition, applicants must be able to be on campus for the two summer six-week residencies.

Note: As a professional development graduate program, the MAAE is not designed for professional licensure. For those interested in achieving initial certification to teach, please investigate 澳门金沙投注_任你博-官网's Teaching (MAT) program.

Art Education Research

澳门金沙投注_任你博-官网's MAAE program has been successful in disseminating graduates' classroom investigations through national peer-reviewed conference presentations and journals: more than a 100 proposals by our graduates have been accepted for presentation at the National Art Education Association annual conferences, and many graduates of MAAE have had their research articles accepted for publication in Art Education Journal.
